Instructions

Peel and cut the tomato into dice and add it to a pan with oil.

When you see that the tomato begins to cook, add the cumin, turmeric, paprika, and salt to the pan and stir to mix well.

Wash and drain the lentils and add them to the pan. Let them cook and absorb the flavors from the pan for about 2 minutes. Stir frequently. Add 2 or 3 cups of water (according to how thick you want your dal).

After several minutes, grind your dal and it's ready to serve.

Tips & Tricks

Try adding half a chopped onion or a couple garlic cloves in the first step so that the tomato absorbs their flavor.

For a more authentic Indian result, why don't you try adding Garam Masala (a mixture of Indian spices) in the second step with a bit of ground ginger?

You can also add cayenne in the second step to add spiciness to the dish.
